Prayer in Need

General - J Vempeny

“Why should we pray for our needs?
God knows our needs before they  arise.”
I thought about these words of Kahlil Gibran
the 20th century Christian Mystic  and felt that
this made sense and stopped that  kind of prayer.
After that it was all praise, worship and thanksgiving.
Soon I felt that something was wrong, something missing.
A kind of dryness in my relationship to my Father in heaven.
Before, I was just a child depending on my Father for everything.
My new attitude made me feel an adult independent of my Dad.
I was confused till I read the words of Jesus telling me clearly,
“Ask and it shall be given”. Jesus wants me to be a child
and depend on  my Father for everything.
Here is also the question of free will.
Freedom to ask or not to ask.
Often I do not get what I ask for,
but something better, more useful.
Ask for a poisonous scorpion to play with
He will give me a cute puppy or bunny instead.
As He knows my needs well, I always add these words,
‘Not my will, but Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven’.
When things go according to God’s plan it will be heaven here.
